Save the Date vs Invitation: When to Send Each (Timing by Occasion)

The difference between a save-the-date and an invitation, and when to send each for weddings, milestone birthdays, offsites, holiday parties and everyday events.

A save-the-date and an invitation do different jobs. The save-the-date claims the date before anything else can; the invitation gives the details and collects replies. Most events only need the invitation.
